Fresh Baked had been waiting years for Rancho del Zocalo to bring the cheese enchilada back, and the reunion landed short of the memory. He found the first bite familiar but underwhelming: the red sauce is the same one the restaurant has always used, slightly spicy in the standard way for a dish like this, but the cheese came out less melty than expected, with a chewy, almost grainy texture he eventually traced to the corn tortillas breaking down rather than the cheese itself. The rice and beans he singled out as the highlight, calling properly made beans at a Mexican restaurant one of his favorite things and far beyond anything out of a can. His bottom line was three out of five: not offensive, tastes fine and will fill you up, and decent value at $14.99 for a full plate, but not the top-ten material he remembered.

2 reviewsThe one miss for Lisaland on Rancho del Zocalo's revamped menu. She describes the cheese filling as incredibly mild with almost no flavor of its own, leaving the sauce as the only thing you really taste, and says the plate needs to be something other than plain cheese — very one note. The generous rice and beans are its saving grace. She left it off her ranking of the new items entirely and said plainly that she would not get it again, suggesting the burrito instead unless plainness is what you are after.
